Maltese Pigeon

Description

Lifespan: Up to 10 years

A medium-sized bird with a distinctive appearance and several colour variations is the Maltese pigeon. The breed is sometimes described as the “monks of the pigeons world” because of its inflated appearance.

This breed comes in a variety of hues, including silver, brown, blue, red, yellow, dun, hammered brown, blue with black rods, and blue-hammered black. All of these hues seem to be very vivid and clear. The blue and black varieties have a damson cere, whereas the white varieties have a red cere. In addition to separate eyelids, the other colour variants, such as yellow, red, silver, and dun, have flesh-colored ceres.

Origin/ Habitat

Most people like to think that this bird may have come from Malta Island in the Mediterranean because of its name. But this is incorrect because it’s unclear where the bird actually came from. It is thought that Austria is where this pigeon breed was first created in the 1800s. Germany later annexed this region. The French Baghdad pigeon and a German variety are thought to have been crossed to create the modern breed. Originally, this species was created as a utility pigeon for producing meat. However, when its reach began to spread to Europe and other continents, it changed into an exhibition pigeon.

Behavior

The Maltese pigeon is a kind and sociable bird. They are quite sociable and will appreciate both their owners’ and other pigeons’ company. If you nurture the birds together from an early age, they will get along with other birds in peace.

However, if the Maltese pigeon views other pigeons or birds as a threat, it may turn hostile, just like any other animal on the land. This is especially true while they are breeding or guarding their young. These birds can’t fly well since they resemble chickens. This is because of their unattractive short-flight feathers and poor aerodynamic forms.

Housing

You might be unsure of the ideal housing for your Maltese pigeons. Maltese pigeons aren’t the world’s best flyers because of their odd size. Therefore, you won’t want to give them a place to live that is too far up because they might struggle to descend! You must also ensure there is plenty of space when designing or choosing a coop for the pigeons to dwell in. This is so that Maltese Pigeons, again because of their size, may live contentedly in a large space.

Feeding

These are the kinds of foods you should be offering your birds if you want to maintain their natural diet. Maltese Pigeons also frequently enjoy apples and pears, but due to their high natural sugar content, these healthy delicacies should only be offered occasionally.  These include fruit, leaves, shoots, seeds, and even tiny spiders or beetle-like insects or arachnids.

Giving your pigeon something it would only infrequently eat in the wild would not assist if you want to maintain it as natural as possible! However, it’s crucial that you give your pigeon the same foods that the majority of other pigeons eat if you wish to nurture it in a more conventional way.
