Light Brown Leghorn

Brown Leghorn

Leghorn chickens come in various color variations, including Light Brown Leghorns. They are lively, slender birds that lay a lot of eggs each year. They are the ideal bird for anyone looking for a high-yield white egg layer.

Appearance

Leghorns have a body type like that of the Mediterranean region, with a thin physique and huge wattles and combs to assist them stay cool. The combs can have a rose comb or they can be big and floppy. In the early stages of their migration to America, the rose comb was a mutation bred into them. The harsher winters encountered in many northern areas are considerably better suited for it.

The brown Leghorn, which can be loosely separated into light brown and dark brown, most likely possesses the most vivid plumage of the Leghorn family. The earlobes are white, while the comb and wattles are crimson. The beak is yellow/horn colored, while the eyes are orange/red in color.

The bird’s shanks and skin are both yellow. There will be four toes on each foot. The females have slightly darker wing color and are a medium reddish brown in appearance. The breast has a light salmon hue. The darker brown, almost black, tail feathers are. The lads display saddle feathers with black stripes in the middle and orange hackles. It resembles a partridge pattern almost exactly.

As Pet

  • Housing

Leghorns that are produced for commercial purposes are kept in tiny battery cages and never get sunlight. I suggest giving your birds slightly alternative living arrangements. With 12 inches of roosting bar per bird, three square feet of space in the coop is plenty for each bird. In the long term, 8–10 square feet per bird are preferred.

Leghorns can forage while being wary of predators since they are very attentive birds. Due to their breeding for commercial production, these birds aren’t the best foragers, but they still benefit from free ranging as would any chicken.

  • Feeding

From hatching to 10 weeks of age, your Leghorn chicks will require a high-quality chick starter. Switch your birds to a grower feed for about a month when they are about ten weeks old.

Leghorns can begin producing rather early, so I advise introducing laying feed at around 14 weeks of age. Once your chickens start producing eggs, give them a calcium supplement, such as oyster shells, in a separate dish so they can eat it whenever they want.

  • Temperament

Light brown Leghorn chickens are tough animals. When choosing a pet chicken, leghorns are most likely not going to be at the top of your list of options. The best way to characterize them is as uneasy and flittery. Leghorns can become tame if poultry keepers who raised them from chicks handle them daily. However, your Leghorn is likely to be a feisty chicken who is unpleasant nine times out of ten. In order to increase egg production, hens have been bred to lack the instinct to become broody.
