Lemon Grass

Lemon Grass

Description

Tall and perennial, lemon grass grows dense fascicles of leaves from a short root. The culm is up to 1.8 meters high and robust and upright. The grass has multiple stiff stems, thin blade-like leaves that droop towards the tips, and it grows in thick clumps. The leaves are blue-green in hue, becoming crimson in the autumn, and when they get damaged, they release a potent lemon scent.

Habitat

The majority of lemon grass species are indigenous to Australia, South and Southeast Asia, and South Asia.

Uses

Digestive tract, stomachaches, high blood pressure, convulsions, discomfort, vomiting, coughing, achy joints (rheumatism), fever, common colds, and fatigue can all be treated with lemongrass. It is also used as a mild astringent and to destroy bacteria.

Varieties

Cymbopogon citratus, or West Indian lemongrass, and Cymbopogon flexuosus, or East Indian lemongrass, are the two types that are typically seen in nurseries. While you can cook with either, the thicker West Indian variety performs better.

Plant Care

  • Water

Lemongrass requires a lot of water to grow. “Because lemongrass grows in tropical places, it can handle more moisture than a non-tropical plant,” adds Harris. Water the soil as often as necessary to maintain moisture. Keep the water oxygenated while growing hydroponically to encourage strong roots and a strong plant.

  • Light

This plant does well in a warm, sunny spot. Try to get at least six hours a day of either indoor LED lighting or direct sunlight.

  • Soil

Rich in nitrogen, well-draining sandy soil is ideal for lemongrass growth. Clay soils tend to be difficult for it. “Adding some mulch over the top will help to trap moisture in the soil.

  • Fertilizer

For best growth, use a slow-release fertilizer to maintain optimum nitrogen levels. In summer months, use fertilizer once a week. In colder months, switch to using fertilizer about once a month.
