Lagotto Romagnolo

Lagotto Romagnolo dog

A medium-sized, historic working breed from Northern Italy, the Lagotto Romagnolo has wooly, curling fur. They are revered for their expertise in finding truffles, but they also make friendly, affectionate housemates. Due to their heritage in duck hunting, lagottos are recognized for having thick coats that are both water-resistant and low in shedding. These dogs are also keen swimmers.

Care as a Pet/ In Captivity

The Lagotto Romagnolo is a smart working breed that should be kept active and well enriched inside the home. However, compared to certain other working breeds, they are not quite as busy. Even people who live in apartments may find them appealing because they can be a little more laid-back around the house.

Exercise

Your Lagotto will love water a lot outside, so be ready for that. Don’t be surprised if it takes some effort to get them out of a river or pond after they have discovered it because swimming may be a terrific method to help them let off steam. Their specially designed body shape and water-repellent double layer are all intended to allow them to spend a lot of time in the water.

Grooming

People who have allergies to dog hair may want to consider the Lagotto. It is frequently the dander on the skin that can cause an issue; no dog is totally hypoallergenic. However, the Lagotto barely sheds, so your home won’t be covered in hair. To keep their coat from becoming matted, tangled, and uncomfortable, it must be frequently combed. In the summer, when the dogs are outdoors in intense heat, some owners prefer to trim the dogs’ hair short.

Nutrition and Diet

The Lagotto Romagnolo should be fed the same high-quality, portion-controlled diet as all other dogs. Food for your Lagotto should be primarily composed of meat. The recommended eating schedule for this breed is two meals per day.

Dog obesity is one of the most prevalent health issues affecting companion dogs globally and can result in a wide range of other (sometimes dangerous) medical diseases. A top priority should be making sure you don’t overfeed your Lagotto.

Training

Lagottos are recognized for occasionally being quite noisy; they are capable of becoming sharp, alert barkers. To prevent this from getting out of hand, you may need to spend some time focusing on bark training.

They are a breed that is exceptionally intelligent and eager to please their owner. They react well to training techniques that use positive reinforcement, and they are old enough to start training at eight weeks. They can develop into incredibly adaptive, loving, and content dogs with the right early socialization and continuous training. They frequently adapt well to a household setting and can live contentedly with other pets.
