Characteristics and Genetics

The Maori people of New Zealand are the source of the Kunekune pig. Based on their DNA, kunekune pigs are descended from Asian domestic pig breeds. However, traders and whalers later brought them to New Zealand around the beginning of the 19th century.

With only 50 estimated pure breeds living in the late 19th century, the Kunekunes risked extinction. Fortunately, Michael Willis and John Simister, the owners of a wildlife park, established a breeding recovery program. This played a significant role in the revival of the breed, which was already in danger of going extinct.

They have excellent behavior, are highly sociable, and are simple to train. To top off their exceptional character Pigs called kunekune come in a variety of hues and are occasionally speckled or even tricolored. They are excellent pets and ornamental animals as a result.
