The Keeshond is a breed of dog with two coats (pronounced KAYZ-hawnd). This coat is made up of a lengthier guard coat and a wool undercoat. The exterior guard hairs are a blend of gray and black with black tips, while the undercoat is a light grey or cream tint. Keeshonden “blow,” or entirely shed their undercoats, twice a year. This prolonged phase of heavy shedding might extend up to three weeks. Keeshond have lush, thick coats that make them appear larger than they actually are.
Personality:
The Keeshond’s inherent instincts make it unnecessary for them to have specific training in order to serve as a vigilant watchdog. However, once someone is invited into the home, the keeshond will accept them without hesitation. They very rarely bite.
The keeshond is amiable toward both people and other dogs by nature. They have high standards for affection and would rather be involved in the family than left outside alone. Keeshonden can “speak” as well as bark. The alert keeshond barks to warn its owner when a stranger is nearby, but they rarely bark excessively.
Care as a Pet/ In Captivity
Exercise
Keeshonds can flourish in relatively tiny spaces and don’t require a lot of activity because of their heritage as barge dogs. You should be able to keep your Keeshond happy and healthy with a few short walks or one longer, more strenuous stroll each day. Activities like agility sports, puzzles, and indoor games are excellent choices for this intellectual breed to mentally and physically tyre your dog out.
Grooming
The dense, fluffy coat of the Keeshond is deceiving, as they require relatively little upkeep in terms of grooming. To avoid matting and tangles, brush Keeshonds at least twice weekly. Bathe them about every three months. Every year, this breed sheds heavily twice, removing the entire undercoat at once. Up to three weeks may go between sheds.
