Characteristics and Genetics

A domestic pig breed indigenous to Kagoshima Prefecture in southwest Japan is called a Kagoshima Berkshire. It comes from the British Berkshire pig breed, which was introduced to Japan in the 1860s and is now common there. According to reports, the Kagoshima Berkshire is descended from two British Berkshire pigs that were imported to Japan in the 1930s.

They are strong pigs that do well in outdoor and industrial settings. Because of their dark tint, they can breed outside without being sunburned. It is a peaceful breed, and the females have outstanding maternal traits like lifespan, fertility, and good milk production (high survival and growth rates).
