Behavior:

With their long pendulous ears and delicate profile, these lovely friendly goats have a long neck.

They are a quiet, gentle breed that is perfect for medium-sized farms. In addition, they make wonderful pets and will generate a lot of very nutritious fresh goats’ milk.

Benefits/Uses:

The main reason this breed is kept is to produce milk. Yet because it is a medium-sized goat, it is also useful for producing meat in some way. Some people also raise them as pets.

Origin/History:

The breed originated in Taranto, a region of Puglia in southern Italy. Yet it’s unclear where the Jonica goat actually came from. It is believed that the Maltese breed and local variants were crossed to create these goats.

The Jonica goat is found throughout southern Italy, but is particularly common in the provinces of Taranto, Murge, Calabria, Catanzaro, Lecce, Matera, and Reggio.
