Japanese Shorthorn

shorthorn cow

Size

1.5 m

Color

Black or Brown Japanese breed.

Physical appearance

The Japanese Shorthorn has horns on both of its sexes, and its coat color can range from scarlet to crimson. It is identified by its short horns, polygonal shape, and hues that range from red to black. The only modern breed of red-colored cattle is this one. In China, Japanese shorthorns are practically everywhere.

Characteristics and Genetics

The Japanese Shorthorn originated in the northernmost Honshu prefectures of Akita, Aomori, and Iwate. Japanese Shorthorn cattle were the only foreign influence in Aomori and Iwate, while there was considerable blending of the Japanese breeds Ayrshire and Devon in the Akita District. The Japanese Shorthorn can be found in Northern Honshu and Hokkaido.

Use

Japanese Shorthorn cattle are only produced for beef. The flesh is less marbled than Japanese Black meat, which results in a lower market price.

Are Beef Shorthorn Cattle Beneficial for Micro-Farming?

Because of their easy-going personalities and hardiness, Beef Shorthorn cattle are a great complement to small-scale farms. They shouldn’t need to be replaced frequently or visit the vet frequently because they rarely have problems with their feet or legs and give birth to calves without any problems. Additionally, because they are grazers and primarily satiate their nutritional demands in this way, caring for them is less expensive.
