Irish Water Spaniel

irish-water-spaniel

The tallest of the spaniels is a type of dog called the Irish Water Spaniel. Irish Water Spaniels are a robust, cobby breed of dog.

Characteristics

Little hair is shed from the densely curled coat. Unlike any other breed of dog that has been identified, the color is liver/puce with a very distinct purple undertone. Because Irish Water Spaniels don’t shed, people who are often allergic to dogs may experience fewer allergic reactions.

Training

When your Irish water spaniel is a puppy, start training and socializing to teach positive behaviors and break undesirable habits. Positive reinforcement training techniques, like using food and praise, work well with this breed. Your commands should be understood immediately if you are clear and consistent in them. To keep your dog’s interest, make training sessions entertaining and interesting.

Grooming and Coat

All Irish Water Spaniels require a grooming routine that involves keeping their ears, teeth, and nails in good condition. Although the IWS’s tight double coat may have some minor shedding, many allergy sufferers have found them to be a comfortable companion to keep. The coat won’t become tightly woven into the fabric or upholstery thanks to the nature of the hair, and any stray hairs may be readily removed because they will collect to create “dust bunnies.” If a consistent effort is made to keep the coat clean and mat-free, even a rookie owner may maintain it. Every one to two weeks, the skin should be thoroughly combed to encourage healthy skin and remove any debris from the coat. Every 6 to 8 weeks, the coat will need to be neatened and shaped with scissors, and regular exposure to water will encourage the proper “ringlets” over the body coat.

Exercise

The Irish water spaniel should engage in intense activity for at least one to two hours each day. Long walks, hikes, runs, bike rides, swimming, and fetch games are all excellent activities. For this intelligent breed, puzzle toys and dog sports like agility and dock diving can present both mental and physical difficulties. It’s usually tranquil in the house as long as the Irish water spaniel gets adequate exercise each day.

Diet and Nutrition

Your Irish water spaniel should always have access to fresh water. And feed it a nutritionally balanced diet, often two meals per day that are precisely calculated. To ensure that you are addressing your dog’s specific needs, make sure to discuss the sort of food you are using and the amount with your veterinarian. Age, exercise level, and other factors can alter nutritional needs. In order to avoid overeating, be careful of snacks and other excess food.
