Characteristics and Genetics
This breed is known for having strong parasite and heat resistance and for being able to flourish in tropical climates. Males often weigh between 900 and 1200 kg, and girls typically weigh between 750 and 900 kg. The breed is typically utilized for producing beef, with relatively few instances of use for producing milk. This breed’s genetic makeup makes it comparatively fertile, more disease-resistant, and easier to calve.
Use
This was the most widely utilized zebu race in Brazil until the 1940s, but since the 1950s, Nelore cattle have gained popularity. Today, Nelore supplies 90% of the cow meat produced in Brazil.
Bulls of this type were sold to American farmers in the 1940s who used them to produce Brahman cattle.
