Indonesian Mountain Weasel

indonesian-mountain-weasel

Description

Scientific Name: Mustela lutreolina

As a weasel, the Indonesian mountain weasel exhibits characteristics that all members of its genus do. Weasels have short, slender legs and long, lean bodies. They can access any space where they can stick their heads thanks to the shape of their bodies. A long, slender body has drawbacks since, although having a similar metabolic rate to other mammals their size, they lose heat significantly more quickly due to their structure. The head to tail base measurement of the Indonesian mountain weasel typically ranges between 279 and 321 metres. There isn’t much information specifically on Indonesian mountain weasels, but we do know that they have reddish-brown fur and a distinguishing foramen on their skull.

Habitat

Only the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra are home to Indonesian mountain weasels. Mountain weasels native to Indonesia are indigenous to the island and part of the Oriental biogeographic region.

As their name suggests, Indonesian mountain weasels reside in the country’s mountainous tropical rainforests. Apart from their attraction for higher elevations, very little is known about their preferred habitat conditions.

Behavior

The Indonesian mountain weasel’s behavior is largely unknown. Other weasels typically live solitary and are nocturnal, only coming together for mating or to fight over territory.

Diet

This Mountain Weasel is a completely carnivorous species, as are all weasels. They have a specific adaptation for eating rodents, and they can take down prey that is much bigger than themselves because to their agility and quickness. They excel at eradicating rodents from their burrows as well.
