The now extinct Blanquito de la Habana was the ancestor of the Havanese, a bichon-type dog that serves as Cuba’s national animal (“little white dog of Havana”).
Morphological Traits
The Havanese is a small dog with a strong build, dropping ears, and a tail slung over its back. The coat is thick, long, smooth, and available in various hues. The Havanese is known for its bouncy movement, which sets the breed apart from all others. It also has a vibrant attitude and a curious nature. The coat is long, smooth, comfortable, and lightweight. The Havanese coat is thick, plentiful, and gently undulating. The Havanese outer coat is soft and light, neither coarse nor too dense like that of other double-coated breeds.
Care as a Pet/ In Captivity
Grooming
The Havanese is not a wash and go dog because they need regular grooming. Depending on the amount of coat, a thorough brushing out two to three times per week is ideal, along with baths every one to two weeks. Never brush a dry coat; instead, spritz it with a moisturizing spray very sparingly.
Feeding
It has been demonstrated that raw feeding improves skin condition, and lovely side benefits of a raw natural food include improved coat health, decreased irritation, less itchy, flaky skin, decreased hair loss, and increased gloss of fur.
Give your Havanese two meals per day, totaling between a half and a cup of dry dog food. Food shouldn’t be left out for free feeding; doing so can cause weight growth very quickly. Dog obesity can shorten a dog’s life span and cause other health problems. Determine your dog’s feeding and exercise regimens depending on your dog’s age, weight, and level of activity. Talk to your veterinarian about any weight gain.
Exercise
The Havanese should exercise every day because they are a generally active tiny dog breed, but they only require approximately 30 minutes of exercise every day. The Havanese don’t require much exercise or playtime inside the house to maintain their happiness and health. When given the right outlets for their energy, these dogs are content to curl up on your lap and watch movies when they’re not playing, which makes them excellent apartment companions.
