Characteristics and Genetics

Another breed of domestic pigs with origins in the UK are called Hampshire Pigs. Their tall ears and black body colour make them stand out from other pigs with comparable characteristics.

It is sometimes referred to as the earliest breed of American pig.

It ranks as the fourth most often reported pig breed in the country, according to the American National Swine Registry.

The English breeds that were discovered in Scotland and northern England are thought to be the ancestors of the Hampshire breed. Between 1827 and 1839, it was transported from Hampshire, England, to America.

Hampshire pigs are well known for producing quality meat.
