Hampshire

Characteristics and Genetics

Developed in the nineteenth century in the English county of Hampshire by mating Southdown rams with ewes of the former Wiltshire Horn and Berkshire Knot breeds. In 1889, it was designated as a breed and given the name Hampshire Down. In 1861, the breed reached New Zealand.

Temperament

An adaptable animal, the down breed can live in practically any climate. These sheep are perfect for displays since they are large, energetic, and intimidating-looking. They are described as being calm and laid-back by some shepherds, though.

They can attack anyone nearby if they become enraged. They are highly attentive and sensitive to tiny things happening around them. The good news is that its aggression can’t cause as much damage and is less damaging.

Uses

This breed of sheep is used for meat. It is raised largely for the production of meat.
