Characteristics and Genetics

A small, black pig breed exclusive to the US is called the Guinea Hog. The breed was once the most prevalent pig breed found on homesteads in the Southeast and goes by several other names, including Pineywoods Guinea, Guinea Forest Hog, Acorn Eater, and Yard Pig.

Although the foundation stock is believed to have come from West Africa, the breed, despite its name, is not native to that region.

The fact that Guinea Hogs can have different leg lengths and different bone sizes suggests that there wasn’t any structured, selective breeding done when they were more common. As the homestead hog disappeared, the Guinea Hog became rare and only remained in the most remote regions of the Southeast. When given grain, especially corn and soy, Guinea hogs gain weight.
