Characteristics and Genetics

The milk of Guernsey cattle is particularly renowned for its distinct yellow tint. They are not regarded as better meat producers, just like jerseys. Heifers take roughly two years to start producing milk. Bull and heifer calves typically wean at a weight of 75 kg. Cattle from Guernsey are getting harder to find. Due to the size of their calf, Guernsey is frequently linked to birth problems. With little nourishment, they are able to produce a lot of milk.

Uses

The Guernsey can produce milk all year long regardless of location thanks to their versatility. They can consume 20% to 30% less feed than typical dairy cows and can generate a lot of milk only from grazing. Much earlier than the typical dairy cow, heifers begin calving at roughly 22 months and begin producing milk at around 2 years old. They even have a longer lifespan, living to be 10 to 12 years old! Their milk is ideal for making butter and cheese since it is strong in protein and fat.

Population

Sadly, throughout the previous 20 years, the population has decreased. There are only a few thousand Guernsey cows registered in the US. Demand and supply are the issue. Guernsey cannot match the expectations of this business because commercial dairy places a greater emphasis on quantity than quality. However, small farms are more likely to have these cows. These lovely cows are valued by small farmers, which also value the superior milk they produce.
