Green Rumped Parrotlet

Green rumped-parrotlet

Description

Life span: 20 – 25 years

The mature male Green-rumped Parrotlet has slightly lighter underparts. Its upper parts, particularly the rump and back, have a vibrant green color, though the rump can occasionally be brighter and coloured blue. The major covers on the wings are dark blue, the secondary coverts are a light blue color. The underwings are often blue in color. However, other than the absence of the blue feathers on their wings, mature female Green-rumped Parrotlets look much like their male counterparts.

Habitat/Native Region

All of tropical South America, from the Caribbean nations of Colombia, Venezuela, and Trinidad in the south and east to the Guianas and Brazil along the lower Amazon River, is home to green-rumped parrotlets. Jamaica, Curaçao, Barbados, and Tobago were the first to record it, while Trinidad wasn’t until 1916. The Caribbean is home to just one species of parrotlet.

Behavior

Green-Rumped Parrotlets are eccentric, amusing, and curious. In groups of two or more, these birds can be a little pushy and aggressive, but by themselves, they are usually amiable. These birds make great house pets since they are often calm. Although they chirp, it is not a loud or bothersome sound. They are renowned for being skilled mimics. They are able to mimic typical noises like alarms and beepers and repeat a few words in a loud voice.

Care

The owner must carefully wash hands before and after touching the pet bird because all birds are probably carriers of contagious illnesses like chlamydiosis. For the correct maintenance of Green-Rumped Parrotlets, a yearly visit to the vet is necessary. At least once a year, take the pet to a respected veterinarian for a checkup. In other situations, call the veterinarian right away if the pet displays any strange behavior. The symptoms of this bird’s disease vary, ranging from blurred eyesight to appetite loss.
