Gouldian Finch

Gouldian Finch

Description

Life span: Up to 10 years

The Gouldian finch is covered mostly for its stunning plumage. This tiny bird comes in a range of striking, vivid colors. Both males and females exhibit markings in the colors black, green, yellow, and red. Females, on the other hand, frequently have a softer color. One evident difference between the sexes is the color of the breasts: the female’s are a paler mauve, while the male’s are purple. Gouldian finches can have red, black, or yellow heads. Juveniles are a greenish grey hue.

Habitat/Native Region

Australian grasslands are home to gouldian finches. Then, up until the late 1960s, Gouldians were captured in huge quantities and sold from Australia. The natural Gouldian population was drastically diminished as a result of the bird exportation. The Gouldian had further difficulties as a result of cattle grazing and the expansion of farmland, and it is currently thought that there are fewer than 2,500 mature Gouldians left in the wild. They have, fortunately, been intensively raised in captivity.

Behavior

Gouldians are delightful “viewing only” birds, but handling them can cause them to panic and even die. These defenseless birds die from stress. They aren’t normally hand-raised, and attempts to tame them will fail. They are lovely to look at but are not delicate to hold. If taken care of correctly, it has been said that these birds can survive for more than 4 to 6 years.

Care

Since they are far less flexible than other common finches like the zebra and society finches, gouldian finches aren’t the easiest to grow. Since they are delicate, easily stressed by extreme temperatures, and prone to a number of illnesses that a less skilled bird guardian would not recognise until it is too late, they are not recommended as starter birds. Gouldian finches should be housed in an environment with a humidity level of at least 50% and a temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit or above. Avoid standing in places that are cold or draughty. Shade and natural light are both necessary for Gouldians.
