Golden Axolotl

Description

A mature golden axolotl’s long, sleek body gives it a hideous aspect. They have four short, unkempt legs that add to their unfinished appearance. Right behind their heads, in three pairs, are their feathered gills. Additionally, they lack scales on their bodies in favour of smooth skin that is extremely sensitive to the elements or sharp objects.

It is an albino morph with a spectrum of colors from peach to almost white. Their common coloration is bright yellow and orange-gold, earning them the nickname “golden axolotl.” These distinct species of axolotl have shiny patches and speckles all over their bodies. Additionally, the pink, yellow, and white hues in their eyes make them incredibly attractive.

Their external gills have a little yellowish hue that gives them a peachy appearance, adding to their exquisite beauty. They blend in pretty well with the white albino colour morphs as youngsters. However, as they age, the colour of their bodies tends to turn gold. Melanophores are essentially absent from the colour pigment of these golden albino colour variants. They still contain xanthophores, which gives them their golden colour. Iridophores in certain unusual specimens give them the appearance of a species with golden leaves.

Tank Setup

If you want to take care of gold axolotls in captivity, your tank must meet all the requirements. Their tank needs to be outfitted with everything necessary to complete requirements correctly.

Tank Size

To develop and roam about unrestricted, golden axolotls require adequate space. The more room they have to swim, the more at ease they are in captivity. You must keep it in a tank of 20 gallons to provide the optimal care. There must be adequate room in the tank for both axolotls if you want to care for two of them. You must increase the tank’s capacity by 10 gallons before adding each axolotl.

Water Parameters

Your golden axolotl’s health depends on the water parameters in your tank being exactly right. If you plan to fill your aquarium with tap water, you must use a water conditioner to remove any harsh contaminants. To maintain a correct water balance, you must also change 20% of the tank’s water each week.

Ensure that there is at least 15 cm of water inside the tank. Additionally, aim to keep the temperature between 14 and 20 degrees Celsius. The recommended temperature for your axolotl tank is 18 degrees. Additionally, the pH of the water must be kept between 6.5 and 7.5.

Food and Diet

Golden axolotls are naturally carnivorous. So you must supplement their diet with foods containing meat. However, they cannot bite or rip food with their teeth. You must thus feed them protein-rich foods that are simple for them to swallow.

They, whether it is alive or dead, easily consume any food. As a result, you can feed those insects, small fish, etc. Pellets made from sinking axolotls are yet another wholesome food you can give these salamanders.

In addition, earthworms can provide a rich source of protein and aid in correct digestion. Additionally, you can occasionally give them brine shrimps as a treat. You can feed gold axolotls other food types like mealworms, daphnia, etc. to keep them healthy.
