Opossums with four eyes have a grey coat and white dots above each eye, giving the impression that they have four eyes. These opossums get their popular name from their white patches. The prehensile tail is bicolored, with a shorter, darker-gray proximal segment and a light distal segment, and it is bare at the tip. Grey dorsal fur contrasts with a cream-colored throat and cheeks. The outside edges of the ears on adults are black. Females have seven mammae in their pouch and are significantly smaller.
Habitat
From southern Mexico to Peru, Bolivia, and southwestern Brazil, four-eyed opossums can be found in Central and South America. Primary, secondary, and disturbed forests are among their habitats.
Behavior
Although they are solitary, nocturnal animals, four-eyed opossums can be active during the day. Despite being terrestrial, they are excellent climbers and swimmers. These opossums construct their nests made of dried leaves in ground burrows, hollow trees, tree forks, and fallen logs. Although their eyelids are truly closed when they are sleeping, the white patches of fur above their eyes give them the appearance of being awake. The four-eyed opossum does not “play dead” like the other opossum species. Instead, they are combative and engage in conflict with would-be predators. A few aggressive behaviors include hissing loudly and expanding the mouth widely. The “fiercest fighter of the opossums” is said to be the four-eyed opossum.

It is kept as a pet due to its solitary and sedentary behavior.
