Florida Flag Fish

Florida Flag Fish

Size

They can reach a maximum length of 6 centimeters (2.4 in).

Physical Characteristics and Behavior

This cyprinodont has a shorter and more laterally compressed body in comparison. Due to its peculiar body and spiky fin rays, it should be classified in its genus. Although men tend to be a little bit bigger than women, both sexes have quite similar physiques. Its dorsal and anal fins are shifted to the back, giving it the appearance of a sunfish that has been flattened.

Habitat

To thrive, they require an acidic environment with a pH of 6.5 to 8.5. Because flag fish are adaptable, you can set the temperature anywhere between 64 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

Keeping as Pet

  • The Aquarium Size

For a single pair, an aquarium with base measurements of 60*30 cm or comparable is just about suitable, although like the majority of members of the Cyprinodontidae family, this species thrives when kept in a bigger tank or container.

  • Maintenance

Should not be overly difficult as long as there are numerous broken lines of sight. Aquatic plants, wool mops, and other types of cover should be used liberally. If utilizing filtration, air-powered, sponge-type machines are preferred as these won’t hurt eggs or fry. Lighting is optional but not necessary, and filamentous algae development should be promoted if at all possible.

  • Diet

A micropredator that mostly consumes small aquatic crustaceans, worms, insect larvae, and other zooplankton, although it also consumes algae and other plant material. In the aquarium, dried foods are typically accepted, but tiny live or frozen meals of fish like Artemia, Daphnia, or bloodworms should also be provided on a regular basis. Introduce a high-quality dry food with additional vegetable, ideally algal, content to the diet if the aquarium or container doesn’t already contain filamentous algae.

  • Tank Mates

The Flag fish can exhibit aggressive behavior because it is very territorial. Fish that can swim quickly are the best tank companions. There won’t be any aggressive behaviors as long as you stick to the size criteria because the fish will have adequate room for its own region.
