Florentine Pigeon

Description

The Florentine is a large, round-bodied pigeon with a horizontal stride. It has short wings, an erect tail, and massive breasts and shoulders. One of the relatively few pigeon breeds with caruncles—a characteristic more typical of wattle pigeons—is this one. The caruncles are nasal, white, and medium in size in Florentine pigeons. The beak of the Florentine pigeon is medium to long and has a tiny bend at the tip. It also has a well-arched head. Their very fine cere, which is often a light flesh hue, surrounds an orange iris that is quite deeply set.

Below the mandible (lower jaw), the neck region has a steep curvature and is densely covered in thick feathers. The breast is also fairly broad in addition to the short and broad back.

Origin/ Habitat

The Florentine pigeon, also known as the Poule Florentin, Florentino, and florentiner tauben, got its name since it was first domesticated in Florence, Italy. It is believed to have originated in the 19th century when racing pigeons from Poland and the United Kingdom were mated with an existing variety of Italian hen pigeon to create a breed with a higher meat yield.

The Florentine pigeon’s domestic range is entirely determined by the location of its breeders and owners because it is a selectively bred variety of pigeon. It is particularly popular in Italy, where the majority are found. Additionally, there are areas of the population in nations like the USA, Germany, and India that are home to many pigeon enthusiasts.

Care

You don’t need to do anything particularly unique or unusual to be able to take care of a Florentine pigeon. Similar to other fancy pigeon species, they need a clean, roomy living space, access to enough of fresh food and water, exposure to natural light, and a lovely, covered floor that needs to be cleaned frequently to prevent contamination. If you plan to raise several pigeons, room will be your main concern because they are rather large birds. You should construct your own pigeon loft.

Diet

The Florentine consumes a diet similar to that of a pigeon in general.  Including a variety of seeds, grains, berries, and nuts is necessary for a healthy, balanced diet. Florentine pigeons can eat snacks such chopped vegetables, chopped fruit like bananas, and mealworms in addition to the aforementioned, as well as a regular supply of fresh drinking water and grit for digestion.
