The Flat-coated Retriever is a breed of gundog that was developed in England. It was created to be a retriever that could swim and run on land.

Characteristics

The Flat-Coated Retriever has a comparatively long muzzle and powerful, muscular jaws. Its head is distinctive to the breed and is described as being “of one piece,” with a backskull that is almost the same length as the snout and a minimal stop. It has almond-shaped dark brown eyes that are pleasant and intelligent. The ears are small, pendant-shaped, and near to the head.

Care as a Pet/ In Captivity

Feeding

Your dog should always have access to fresh water. And feed your dog a high-quality, nutritionally-balanced meal. As long as they are offered in moderation, a variety of human foods can be eaten by golden retrievers. These consist of proteins like fish and lean meats like beef, chicken, turkey, or salmon. They are also permitted to consume some dairy products, such plain yogurt, along with fruits, vegetables, cooked rice, and pasta.

Grooming

The flat-coated retriever doesn’t need a lot of grooming equipment. Put together a metal comb, slicker, and bristle brush. Plan a weekly grooming session to maintain your dog’s coat tidy and clear of tangles, but be sure to constantly check for mats in the feathery regions and behind the ears. Every spring, your retriever should shed his coat.

Depending on how unclean it becomes, give your dog a bath every month or so. And check for dirt, infection, and wax accumulation in its ears at least once each week. Always thoroughly dry your ears after bathing or swimming. Additionally, inspect your dog’s nails around once a month to see if they require trimming. And should ideally brush its teeth every day.

Exercise

This lively dog will require at least two hours of exercise every day. Long strolls, jogs, rides on bikes, hikes, swims, and intense fetch matches are all recommended. A healthy amount of mental stimulation is also crucial. Dog sports like agility and rally can help you expand both mental and physical energy. Puzzle toys can too.

Lack of exercise and mental stimulation might cause flat-coats to exhibit problematic habits like excessive barking or chewing. It’s great if they reside in a house with a yard where they may play and run around without restriction.
