Physical characteristics and behavior
The snout of the flaming hawkfish is approximately average length, and its body is intense and compact. The villiform teeth are inside the mouth, whereas the canines are on the outside. This species’ black contour around the eyes and underside of the dorsal fin stands out sharply against its red body. It is nine centimeters long at its longest (3.5 in).

- Size of the Flame Hawk Fish Aquarium
Flame hawkfish are genuinely medium-sized fish, so you’ll need to upgrade from the 10 to 20-gallon aquariums that novice aquarists enjoy in order to keep them. As fully developed adults, flame hawk fish should be kept in aquariums no less than 40 gallons.
When keeping flame hawkfish, you must offer a roomy tank for two reasons. The first is that these are not little fish; they have deep bodies and can grow up to 5 inches long. This indicates that they produce a lot of ammonia and other waste products and have a sizable bioload. Therefore, it is best to dilute these substances in as much water as possible.
- Tank Mates
The flame hawkfish requires some caution when selecting tank mates. These fish, as I’ve already mentioned, can be a little territorial and hostile against outsiders. Any fish that enjoys exploring the substrate should have room to locate their own hiding places. The Royal Grammas, Engineer Gobies, Marine Bettas, and Moray Eels are cave-dwelling species that might clash with a red flame fish in a tank that is too small.

- Diet
It can be extremely challenging to induce a hawkfish to consume dead food that isn’t moving because they are predatory and highly focused on movement. Start off with live food if you want to get a picky flame hawkfish to eat. Your fish will put on weight as it becomes used to its new environment with the help of live brine shrimp, blood worms, and tubifex worms.
Once your new flame hawk fish is accustomed to feeding, you can begin combining frozen foods with the flames, or even protein-rich pellets. Your hawkfish will eventually get the ability to consume any food, including dead ones!
- Water Parameters
Temperatures between 73 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit and a specific gravity of roughly 1.020 to 1.025 are optimal. pH values must range from 8.1 to 8.4.
