Size

Fjords are small and compact dogs that normally stand between 13.2 and 14.2 hands tall, while there is no established height requirement for the breed. Most of the time, these horses weigh between 900 and 1,000 pounds.

Physical Attributes

The Norwegian Fjord Horse’s conformation is distinct from that of many other breeds in that it combines the muscling and bone of draught horses with smaller size and higher agility. Its body is compact and muscular, and it has strong, arched legs and feet.

Colors

Brown dun, red dun, and grey are the Fjord Horse’s primary primal colors. Additionally, the breed’s natural colors include white and yellow dun.

History and Origin

The Fjord is one of the oldest horse breeds still in existence today, with a long history spanning thousands of years. It might have a connection with the Przewalski horse, a wild horse that historically grazed across Asia. The oldest Fjord relatives were domesticated in Norway more than 4,000 years ago. For hundreds of years, these horses were used on Norwegian farms, and the Vikings even rode them into battle.

Temperament

The Fjord horse is known to be good-natured, laid-back, and agreeable. They are perfect for kids and beginners because they are loving and gentle as long as they are handled gently.

Diet and Nutrition

Most Fjords are simple to keep, so they don’t require much hay or feed. Many Fjords don’t require any grain at all, thriving just fine on high-quality hay and a vitamin and mineral supplement. If given access to grass, certain Fjords may gain weight, so these horses must be turned out in a dry lot or should wear a grazing muzzle when on pasture. While every horse is unique, a little feed generally goes a long way with the Fjord breed.

Grooming

Fjords require relatively typical grooming. They have the capacity to develop thick winter coats, therefore regular currying and the use of a shedding blade can aid in the springtime shedding of those coats. Fjords will need to have their manes regularly trimmed to keep them standing up straight in the style that’s typical of the breed. Regular grooming and hoof maintenance will also be beneficial for these horses.
