Firefly Ball Python

firefly-ball-python

Description:

Scientific name: Python regius

Life span: 25-30 years

Bands of dark brown and black color distinguish the neon yellow skin of firefly ball pythons. Young firefly ball pythons might not initially exhibit the expected colors since the pythons’ coloring lightens as they grow older.

Since the male snakes’ reproductive organs are kept in the tail, it can be challenging to distinguish between men and females. Despite the fact that female pythons can grow to be larger than males, size is still not a reliable indicator of sex.

Native Region/Habitat

African countries in the west and center, primarily the Sub-Saharan region, are home to ball pythons. They are extremely hardy creatures that can thrive in a variety of environments, including grasslands, savannas, and even forests.

Behavior:

Because of their reputation for having a calm disposition, firefly ball pythons are well-liked by snake keepers. Due to their reclusive nature, these pythons may spend the majority of the day hiding in boxes or shaded areas of their tank. Although these snakes rarely bite their owners, they do on occasion.

Care As a pet/In captivity:

Due to their low maintenance requirements, firefly ball pythons are the ideal snake for new pet owners.

  • Adult firefly ball pythons need a tank that is 30 to 40 gallons in size, while juvenile snakes need a tank that is 20 to 30 liters.
  • Make a basking area that is warmer than the rest of the tank for your python. While the rest of the tank should be between 75 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, this section should be between 85 and 96. A specialized reptile-heating pad should be placed on the tank’s bottom to create the basking area. The tank needs to be kept at 75°F or higher to maintain the health of your ball python.
  • To allow your python to shed its skin effectively, the humidity in the tank should be between 50 and 60%. Use a hygrometer to measure the humidity in the tank.
  • One mouse should be fed to young firefly ball pythons two to three times per week. Feed a large mouse or rat once a week, or even once every two weeks, if the snake is fully matured.
