Characteristics and Genetics

The Finnsheep, sometimes called Finnish Landrace or Finn, is a historic breed that is indigenous to Finland. It is one of numerous short-tailed Landrace breeds found in North Europe. Finn wool from New Zealand has a good gloss and is medium fine. The wool is longer, softer, has a better radius of curvature, and has fewer prickles. The length and quality of wool produced in Australia have increased to the point that there are now sheep that may be shorn twice a year, and these sheep’s favorable wool traits have been heavily assimilated into the Merino flock.

Special Statements

    • Finnsheep are extremely hardy, powerful, and active creatures. They have a good sense of climate adaptation.
    • Actually, they are known for having many multiple births. An average ewe will typically give birth to 3, 4, or even 5 lambs all at once. Although the lambs are frequently small, they are healthy at birth and develop quickly.
  • They reach sexual maturity at a young age, beginning at 6 months. Most Finnsheep ewes reproduce out of season, though some may have two lambs each year.
