The Finnish Lapphund, also known as the Finnish Lapponian Dog, is a medium-sized Spitz-type breed that is hardy and laid-back.
Morphology
The Finnish Lapphund is a sturdy-built, medium-sized dog. It has a thick coat, pricked, extremely movable ears, distinguishing markings, and a graceful nose. In addition to pure black, white, and gray, other colors include black and cream, black and tan, white and gray, brown and white, and brown and cream. Males must measure between 46 and 52 centimeters at the withers in accordance with breed standards, while females must measure between 41 and 47 centimeters. However, as the breed standard specifies that type is more significant than size, some variation is permitted. A lengthy topcoat and a short, fluffy undercoat make up the Lapphund’s thick double coat. Extreme cold resistance and water resistance are both present in the coat.
Care as a Pet/ In Captivity
Considering that Finnish Lapphunds want to be active with their owners, schedule daily exercise. They also require consistent training, socialization, and grooming on a regular basis.
Grooming
The coat does need to be thoroughly brushed once a week to stay in good shape. Seasonal shedding occurs in lappies, but frequent brushing can readily keep the fur under control. They are heat-intolerant due to their double coat.
Lapphunds from Finland usually don’t smell. Nevertheless, depending on how dirty your dog becomes, plan on giving him a bath every month or so. At least once a week, check your dog’s ears to see if they need to be cleaned. And nearly every month clip its nails. Aim to brush your teeth every day as well.
Exercise
Additionally, daily activity is required. Plan to exercise your Finnish Lapphund for at least one hour each day. Although they don’t have the same level of activity as many other herding dogs, these canines nonetheless like being active. Intense play sessions, daily walks, jogging, and trekking are all excellent methods to get some of their energy out. Additionally, puzzle games can be mentally taxing. Finnish Lapphunds are also exceptional in dog sports including agility and herding competitions.
Diet and Nutrition
Always make sure your dog has access to fresh water. And provide your dog a high-quality, nutritionally balanced diet, usually in the form of two small meals per day. To make sure you are meeting your dog’s specific needs, which can vary depending on age, activity level, and other factors, talk with your veterinarian about both the quantity and the type of food you are feeding him. Additionally, keep treats in mind to avoid overeating and excessive weight gain.
