Felly Pony

FELLY PONY

Size

1.3 to 1.4 meters.

Physical Attributes

The Fell pony, a near relative of the Dale pony, has a short stature, a large chest, long, sloping shoulders, and powerful hindquarters and legs. They typically have thick, shaggy manes and tails as well as silky feathered legs. These horses are renowned for their tenacity, power, and steadiness.

Colors

The most popular colors are black and brown, however bay and gray are also possible.

Characteristics and Genetics

The Fell pony, which was originally developed in the English counties of Cumberland and Westmorland, is scarcely equipped to handle the harsh hilly environment of the Pennines. The now-extinct Galloway pony, which served as the forerunner of the Dales Pony, shares ancestry with the Fell Pony. It is thought to have started on the Scottish-English border, quite likely before the Roman era. The Fell Pony Society makes no claims that these ponies have ever been mixed with imported Roman war stallions.

These quick horses are prized nowadays for cross-country travel, hunting, or trekking. They occasionally appear at Pony Club competitions but aren’t typically used for showjumping. Fells have calm, intelligent temperaments, which make them excellent family horses.

Grooming Requirements

A Fell Pony’s coat needs to be groomed frequently to stay shiny, smooth, and healthy-looking. The tail and the mane, which are thick and lengthy, need special attention. These may be kept clean and untangled with proper washing and grooming, especially when using the right tail and mane brushes.

Additionally, make sure to use a hoof pick to thoroughly clean the hooves and check them for any potential ailments. The fur that surrounds the hooves must also be kept clean and in good condition.

A curry comb, along with a dandy brush and a shedding blade, can be used to remove debris, loose hair, and dirt from a pony’s coat on the rest of the body. The finest places to apply a body finishing brush are delicate areas like the face and legs. It will be possible for the owner to spend time with the pony while grooming it using these common equine tools, which is beneficial for this breed.
