Egyptian chickens of the Fayoumi or Egyptian Fayoumi breed. It is derived from and called for the Fayoum governorate, which is located west of the Nile and southwest of Cairo. It is thought to be an old breed.
Description
Chickens from the Fayoumi tribe are quite little, with big, dark eyes, and tails carried high. With their forward-jutting breast and neck and upright tails, they are sometimes compared to a roadrunner. They have a silvery head, a huge single comb, onyx-dark eyes, and a thin, black-speckled body. Chicken from the Fayoumi region often have slate-blue skin and dark horn-colored beaks. Hens have barred bodies with a silver-white color on their necks and heads. Fayoumi roosters have white and black barring across the rest of their body, with silver-white on the head, neck, saddle, and back. Being independent birds that cover such vast distances in their daily feeding, their wide, brilliant, black eyes are great at monitoring the skies for predators.
