Physical Attributes

With a sleek coat and a compact frame, they have a conformation akin to Thoroughbreds or Arabs. The Falabella has a slim and compact body. The breed also inherited from pony bloodlines several characteristics similar to cobs, including as strong bones and a thicker coat of hair, notably in the mane, tail, and area around the fetlocks.

Characteristics and Genetics

A little horse breed from Argentina is called a falabella. With a wither height that ranges from 63 to 86 cm, it is one of the smallest horse breeds.

The Lipizzan breed first appeared in the sixteenth century. One of the earliest stud farms is where its name comes from. The horses that the Spanish carried to the western hemisphere were of Andalusian and other Iberian bloodlines, and they are the ancestors of the horses in South America. By the middle of the 19th century, there were a number of smaller, inbred animals in the Mapuche herds in southern Buenos Aires province in Olavarria, Argentina. Significant numbers of these horses developed near the southern half of the continent under physically isolated conditions. Beginning in 1868 with the breeding programme of Patrick Newhall, the local horses of Criollo stock were used to create the first Falabella horses in Argentina. Juan Falabella, Newhall’s son-in-law, received the herd and breeding techniques after Newhall went away. Juan also added little Thoroughbreds, Welsh Ponies, and Shetland Ponies to the bloodlines. He was able to maintain continuously small size within the herd through extensive inbreeding, which was developed close to Lipica, which is written “Lipizza” in Italian and is now a village in Slovenia where Lipizzans are still bred. Warfare raging across Europe has repeatedly put the breed in risk, particularly during the War of the First Coalition, World War I, and World War II. The Disney film Miracle of the White Stallions made the American soldiers’ World War II rescue of the Lipizzans famous.

Care as a Pet

Falabella horses are little, which leads some people to believe that caring for them is simple, but this characteristic actually calls for certain safeguards. They might easily overeat or get harmed in tight spaces. The longevity of a Falabella horse is also very long, ranging from 40 to 45 years, making them a longer-term investment than other horses.

Temperament

Breeders also pay close attention to temperament, and the Falabella horse’s disposition is extraordinary. They make excellent companion horses for people of all ages, including seniors and children.

Falabella horses are amiable and love interacting with people; their personality is sometimes described as gregarious or extroverted. When observed playing with other Falabellas in a field or pasture, they are occasionally referred to as feisty. They are also quite intelligent, and training them for different purposes is simple.

The Falabella foal is renowned for being a loving creature. They are endearing to everyone they come into contact with due to their small stature and loving nature.

Nutrition and Diet

Every horse’s diet is comparable to the Falabella diet, albeit on a much smaller scale. A Falabella miniature horse is simple to overfeed, and obesity can lead to other medical issues. Another problem is when horses get too thin. It is possible to tell if a horse is becoming too thin or too fat by feeling their body on a weekly basis.

Animals need regular access to clean, fresh water because it is the most essential nutrient for them. The second largest part of the diet is forage, which includes grass and hay.

Grooming

Falabella horses are enjoyable and simple to groom because they are little and lovable. Like full-size horses, they should be groomed every day to check for wounds and maintain healthy skin and fur. The hooves must be picked at least once per day.

Since falabellas aren’t typically ridden or worked like other horses are, falabella grooming is one approach to develop a relationship with the animal. Start with a curry comb and be sure to avoid delicate regions like the face and legs when using the grooming tools. then use both the soft and stiff brushes. To prevent breaking the hairs in the mane and tail, use extra care.
