Estrela Mountain Dog

Estrela Mountain Dog

A huge dog breed developed in Portugal’s Estrela Mountains to protect herds and farms, the Estrela Mountain Dog.

Morphology

The undercoat is much denser than the outer coat and typically has a lighter hue. Short and smooth hair covers the front sides of the head and legs. From the ear’s base to its tips, the hair on the ears gets shorter. A ruff at the neck, breeches on the buttocks and backs of the legs, and feathering on the tail result from the longer hair on the neck, buttocks, tail, and rear sides of the legs. Males may possess a “lion’s mane.”

Care as a Pet/ In Captivity

Temperament

It is witty, dependable, and affectionate toward people it knows but cautious of those it does not. Any kids in the family are automatically protected by it. It must receive early and ongoing socialization in order to be dependable with other dogs and small pets.

Feeding

For stable, mobile joints, the poultry components in this large breed dog food with a chicken base are natural sources of glucosamine. Additionally, the quantities of calcium and phosphorus are sufficient to strengthen the bones and joint cartilage for added support.

Grooming

The Estrela is available in longhair and shorthair versions, and both have a thick outer coat that resembles goat hair in texture. A bath every now and then will keep them clean and looking their best in addition to weekly grooming. For you and your pet, grooming can be a great way to strengthen your relationship. Regular trimming with a nail clipper or grinder is advised to prevent overgrowth, splitting, and cracking of their robust, quickly developing nails. To prevent a buildup of wax and debris that could cause an infection, examine their ears frequently. You should brush your teeth frequently.

Exercise

Although the Estrela is a breed that tends to be peaceful, he can be rather playful around children, especially when they are young. If you don’t have a working dog, your options for exercise could include playing outside, preferably in a fenced-in area, or going on daily walks. Indoor exercises like chasing a ball that has been rolled across the floor or teaching him new behaviors can be effective methods to burn off energy during bad weather. This breed, as evidenced by his history, requires room to wander and is unsuited to apartment living. If not stimulated enough, he will become disruptive inside the house. Exercise and mental stimulation for your dog can also be provided by training for canine sports like agility, obedience, and rally.
