A little dog breed of the spaniel type, the King Charles Spaniel is also referred to as the English Toy Spaniel. The Kennel Club merged four distinct toy spaniel breeds under this single name in 1903.

Morphology

King Charles has a line of black skin around its mouth, huge, dark eyes, a short snout, a high dome, and a high domed skull. It has a small yet compact body and is typically 9 to 11 inches (23 to 28 cm) tall at the withers. The tail of the breed is typically docked. With the exception of the UK and a few other nations in Europe, where docking and cropping have been forbidden since 2006.

Care as a Pet/ In Captivity

The English toy spaniel is playful and has a reasonable amount of energy. It does need some maintenance for its coat, and from an early age it should be socialized and trained.

Grooming

To remove loose fur and avoid tangles and mats, brush your English toy spaniel’s coat at least twice every week. To remove any tangles, it’s best to have a comb and a soft-bristle brush on hand. Every month or so, give yourself a wash and make sure to thoroughly brush your coat afterwards.

Exercise

Plan to exercise your dog for at least an hour each day. This breed is usually quiet indoors as long as it receives enough exercise. For this young dog, a morning and evening walk and some fun throughout the day should be sufficient. Dog sports and puzzle toys can both assist to cognitively challenge your dog.

It’s crucial to remember that English toy spaniels typically struggle in hot temperatures due to their short faces, which can make breathing difficult. Therefore, while it’s warm outside, exercise briefly.

Diet and Nutrition

Keep fresh water readily available for your English toy spaniel at all times. Additionally, give it two measured meals each day of a high-quality, nutritionally balanced canine cuisine. The best diet is frequently one designed especially for little or toy animals. To ensure that you are addressing your dog’s specific needs, talk to your vet about the type of food you are feeding him as well as the quantity. Pay attention to treats and other extra food as well. For a little dog, even a single pound of excess weight can be problematic.
