English Springer Spaniel

english springer spaniel

The Spaniel breed of gun dog known as the English Springer has historically been employed for flushing and retrieving wildlife.

Lifespan

The average lifespan of this friendly, energetic breed is twelve to fourteen years.

Morphological Characteristics

Small and medium-sized, the English Springer Spaniel is a breed of dog. It has feathers on the legs and tail, and its coat is medium in length. It is a well-built, balanced dog with a soft countenance and a wagging tail of friendliness. Perhaps of all dog breeds, this one exhibits the biggest separation between working and display lines. Although they are registered as the same breed, field-bred and show-bred dogs appear to be different breeds. Compared to the longer-furred show-bred dogs, field-bred dogs typically have shorter, rougher coats. They rarely shed in the autumn and typically only do so in the summer and spring. The coat can be predominantly white with black or liver markings, or it can be predominantly white with black or liver markings. Tricolor coats, which are black and white or liver and white with tan markings, are typically found under the tail and on the inside of the ears, the cheeks, and the brows. Any white area of the coat could have ticking specks on it. A medium-length flat or wavy topcoat and a soft undercoat are characteristics of springer spaniels.

Grooming

Give your springer spaniel a thorough grooming every two months or so and brush him at least once a week to avoid matting. The grooming needs of an English springer spaniel won’t be very demanding. Given that their coats tend to be heavier, the Bench or Show kinds could need additional brushing.

They shed moderately, so a regular weekly brush can help keep lank hairs under control and the coat in good shape. You should constantly pay additional care to these regions when brushing because they are more prone to developing mats around their ears and on their feathering. Unless they’ve been playing in muddy puddles, these dogs can get away with a bath every two to three months.

Because of their pendulous ears, you should regularly examine them to make sure they’re clean; if they like to swim, this is especially important. If they aren’t kept clean and dry, dirt and water can more readily get caught in their low-hanging ears, which can result in ear infections.

Diet and Nutrition

Like any dog, your English springer spaniel has to eat a high-quality, portion-controlled diet. You could find that dogs who are very active require a diet designed for working or high-energy breeds. This will guarantee they are consuming enough vitamins, minerals, and proteins to maintain a healthy body weight.
