Elongated Tortoise

elongated-tortoise.

Description

A species of tortoise called the Indotestudo elongata can be found in Nepal, Southeast Asia, and other regions of the Indian Subcontinent.

These up to one-foot-long tortoises have yellow heads and elongated, relatively narrow carapaces, as their common names would imply. The carapaces have a yellowish-brown colour, and each scute frequently has black “smudges” on it. Compared to females, males have substantially longer tails and a plastral concavity.

Habitat

India (Tripura, East Bengal, Jalpaiguri, and Singhbhum in Jharkhand), Bangladesh, Nepal, Burma (or Myanmar), Laos, Thailand (including Phuket), Cambodia, Vietnam, Western Malaysia, and Southern China are among the countries where the species is present.

Behavior

Crepuscular animals, or those who are most active at dawn and twilight, include elongated tortoises. They have big eyes that can adjust to dim light easily. The species’ males engage in aggressive, borderline sadistic, sexual behavior. The female is frequently rammed from behind and bit in the head, neck, and hind legs.

Keeping as Pet

Enclosure Size

You must build an inside enclosure if you reside somewhere with chilly winters. For the summer, outdoor habitats are usually advised, but for the winter, you’ll need to establish a pleasant indoor ecosystem to keep them secure. We’re not talking about tiny containers here; the optimum indoor enclosure will be a big plastic tub. At least six feet broad by eight feet long must be the dimensions of the enclosure.

Humidity

For elongated tortoises, a humidity range of 60 to 80 percent is optimum. Mist the substrate once or twice a day to do this. When producing a humid atmosphere, the absorbent material will handle the bulk of the work.

Food & Diet

Elongated tortoises are omnivores in the wild. They rely on plant-based diets to exist, though. The majority will priorities eating fruits and vegetables while limiting their carrion hunting to once or twice a week. One of the greatest ways to ensure your pet’s health and an essential component of elongated tortoise care is to replicate a natural diet. Fortunately, it’s not that difficult. These tortoises will consume practically anything you give them!

They will readily consume: romaine lettuce, sweet potatoes, carrots, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, flowers, green beans, bananas, apples, peas, cantaloupe, earthworms, dandelion greens, pears and watermelon.
