A sizable, evergreen tree, the dragon blood tree can reach heights of up to 15 metres (50 feet). It has many branches, a large, central stem, and an umbrella-shaped canopy. The tree’s long, narrow leaves are arranged on the branches in a spiral pattern.
The scarlet resin that the dragon blood tree makes to bind wounds and defend itself from disease and pests is its most distinguishing characteristic. The resin is extracted from the tree’s bark by making incisions, and it has a number of uses, including traditional medicine, cosmetics, and dye.
The tree is renowned for its distinctive canopy, which has the shape of an umbrella and shelters the lower branches. The tree has deep roots that enable it to access underground water sources and is adapted to live in the dry, arid environment of Socotra.
Care
Due to the dragon blood tree’s preference for a warm, dry environment, it is ideal to grow the tree in an area with lots of sunlight and soil that drains quickly.
Regular watering of the tree is necessary, but avoid overwatering it to prevent root rot.
During the growing season, fertilize the tree once a month with a balanced fertilizers to help encourage healthy growth.
Regularly prune the tree to remove any damaged or dead branches.
Due of its sensitivity to frost and intense heat, the tree should be shielded from extreme temperatures.
