Double Yellow-Headed Amazon Parrot

Double-Yellow-Headed-Amazon-1

Description

Life span: 30+ years

A severely endangered Amazon parrot native to Mexico and northern Central America, the yellow-headed amazon is also known as the yellow-headed parrot and the double yellow-headed amazon. This bird has a yellow head and a green body. The beak is horn in hue, and the eyes have a white ring around them. A small amount of dark gray can be seen on the heads of young birds, but with each molt, the crown gradually becomes more yellow.

It is occasionally believed to be a yellow-crowned amazon subspecies. It is a well-liked pet and an excellent talker. It is believed that half of all wild birds that are caught perish as a result of poaching for the worldwide pet trade, which has brought the species to the brink of extinction in the wild.

Habitat/Native Region

This species can be found in Belize’s riparian forests and sparsely forested areas, as well as Guatemala’s evergreen forests and mangroves. One significant ecoregion of occurrence are the pine woods of Belize. It can be seen alone, in couples, small groups, occasionally in huge flocks, and in all of these habitats. The range previously covered the Mexican coastal slopes from the Tres Marias Islands and Jalisco to Oaxaca as well as from Nuevo León to northern Chiapas and southwestern Tabasco. Additionally, a disjointed area that covered the majority of Belize and another that covered a small portion of northeastern Guatemala and northwestern Honduras were also included.

Behavior

A hand-fed double yellow-headed Amazon is a social bird that can develop close relationships with family members, but as it ages, it often only picks one person to love. While this can be annoying for other family members, the “one person bird” issue is typically prevented if everyone in the family gives the bird equal attention. The double-yellow-headed Amazon is a delightful, hardy, chatty, boisterous, and usually gloomy bird that is both independent and strongly connected to its human companions. For someone who understands its needs and is willing to accept it for what it is, the Amazon makes an ideal companion.

Care

The double yellow-headed amazon is a gregarious bird that likes to crawl around in its environment. If given enough room, it will fly. It is advised to use sturdy cage materials like powder-coated steel or stainless steel. Toys are necessary for this bird, and the most crucial toys are ones that can be torn and chewed. The intelligent double yellow-headed will grow easily bored if not given work, and in the absence of something to do, may scream and act aggressively. Although it is a lesser-known plucker, it is adept at spotting neurotic tendencies that can be grating.
