Characteristics and Genetics

The South African Department of Agriculture made the decision in the 1930s to create a new breed of sheep with high carcass quality and good lambing rates. The Dorper is a hybrid of the Blackhead Persian and the Dorset Horn. The Black-headed and White Dorper are the products of the breeding scheme. Currently, the Dorper is being bred in the USA, Australia, South America, and the Middle East. Dorper sheep are distinctive because they are raised exclusively for mutton (rather than just lamb). Shepherds with some expertise are frequently able to have numerous rounds of lambing each year since they have an extended breeding season. Due to this, the Dorper breed is among the most cost-effective in terms of producing meat.
