Donskoy Cat

donskoy-cat

Description

Size: 6-12 pounds

The Donskoy is a muscular, medium-sized cat that resembles an elf because of its triangular head, big ears, and big eyes. Its absence of hair is undoubtedly its most distinguishing feature, though peach fuzz is frequently present on the ears and nose. Additionally, many Donskoy cats are hairless. A Donskoy’s skin is quite wrinkled, particularly on the neck, face, chest, and base of the tail. A Donskoy is frequently compared to a warm chamois towel when being pet.

Origin and History

It is possible to trace the Donskoy breed back to a single kitten. Cat breeder Elena Kovaleva found a hairless cat in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, in 1987, and that was the beginning of this breed.

Behavior

Activity Level: Moderate

Social Needs: The Donskoy are very gregarious people who require a lot of care from their family.

These sociable, energetic cats are recognized for being extremely devoted; in fact, their devotion is frequently compared to that of dogs. They are also intelligent and devoted. These active and inquisitive cats enjoy cuddling but are also capable of mischief.

Grooming

Donskoys require special maintenance because they are hairless (or nearly hairless). Donskoy owners won’t need to brush their cats, but they will need to wipe them off every day, if feasible, with a soft, wet towel because their bodies create oils but don’t have enough hair to absorb them. Once or twice a month, give your cat a full bath with a gentle shampoo designed just for cats.

Like any cat, your Donskoy should have its claws trimmed on a regular basis, have its teeth brushed or cleaned at least a few times a week, and have wax or other debris in its ears gently cleaned with a cotton ball.

Exercise

These cats are incredibly energetic and enjoy playing, running, and jumping. However, as long as you give your Donskoy lots of toys, cat trees or similar climbing chances, and boxes or cat play tunnels for diving, leaping, and exploring, it will usually take care of its own exercise needs. Still, setting out some time each day to engage in energetic play with your cat is entertaining and a great way to strengthen your bond. Your Donskoy will enjoy chasing thrown objects like crinkle balls, “cat dancer” feathers on strings, and ribbons as well as chasing after you as you run through the home.

Because of their baldness, these cats are more susceptible to sunburn, overheating, and hypothermia, thus your Donskoy should only leave the house or go outside for play and exercise on a covered porch or “catio”.

Diet and Nutrition

Donskoys typically eat more during the winter to maintain their body temperature since they have a greater body temperature than most cats. However, after winter is through, their consumption ought to revert to normal. Your Donskoy should consume a diet that is high in protein, moderate in fats, and low in carbohydrates, as should all pet cats. You can feed your cat only kibble, only canned food, or a combination of the two, but it should always have access to fresh water.
