Diamond Dove

Description

Life span: Up to10 years

The diamond dove is a delicate, little bird with a lovebird-like body but a long, slender tail. Although white and silver mutations are now available, the nominate bird, or the color of the bird most frequently observed in nature, is a darkish-gray with white flecks on the wings. Red eye rings are present in both sexes, although the male’s ring is larger.

Habitat/Native Region

The diamond dove is a resident bird of Australia. In Central, Western, and Northern Australia, as well as other lightly arid or semi-arid regions, the dove is most frequently observed close to bodies of water. They are one of Australia’s tiniest pigeons, along with the tranquil dove. When the center of Australia is exceptionally dry, they have occasionally been observed in parks and gardens in Southern Australia.

Behavior

Diamond doves won’t necessarily want to interact unless a person purchases a hand-fed bird or hand-feed pair’s young. These birds are happy to reproduce in pairs. If the owner handles them, they won’t bite the owner because they are gentle. Children would probably prefer to hold and pet a bird than a diamond dove, which is not a good pet for kids. These birds thrive in aviaries where they may fly and engage in social and natural interactions. However, keep in mind that doves can’t effectively defend themselves against larger or more hostile birds. Due to their sociable nature, these birds will need a dove’s companionship if they have not formed a link with people.

Care

Parrots need a different kind of home than doves. Doves need a wide cage because, unlike parrots, they cannot climb the cage bars and must instead fly back and forth to get around. Diamond doves should have lots of room to walk about since they spend the majority of their day on the ground. To promote optimum foot health in doves, offer a range of perch styles and diameters. Doves also require access to bathing areas.
