Description

Lifespan: over 10 years

A medium-sized bird with an extremely attractive appearance is the damascene pigeon. The dark plum eye cries and the sparkling eyes of these lovely birds are two of their most distinguishing characteristics. Their head is moderately sized, slightly rounded, and has a significant stop over the wattle. Their ceres are damson or plum in colour, and their eyes are exceptionally bright. They have a stocky, dark-colored, blunt beak.

And the beak is almost as long as it is wide. They have a large, prominent breast that projects forward. The Damascene pigeon’s wings are closely clasped to its body and positioned so that their tips barely touch the tail. These birds have dark red feet and legs, and their toenails are black.

Origin/ Habitat

A breed of domestic pigeon known as the Damascene pigeon is thought to have originated in Syria, specifically in the city of Damascus, from which it derives its name. The breed is often referred to as the Syrian Damascene or the Damascene Fairy.

It is believed that the Damascene pigeon was created there by careful selection and breeding of numerous local pigeon species because Damascus has a long history of breeding and selling pigeons. The breed is highly regarded for its overall elegance and lovely feather patterns.

Behavior

Damascene pigeons are renowned for their peaceful, placid demeanour. For people who value their beauty and quiet demeanour, they make good pets.

Environment

Give your Damascene pigeons a large, spotless, and well-ventilated breeding loft. A pleasant temperature should be maintained in the loft and there should be no draughts. Offer nesting containers stuffed with pristine, dry materials.

Feeding

The majority of the Damascene pigeon’s diet should consist of high-quality commercial pigeon feed. These meals are normally designed to supply all the nutrients, including protein, vitamins, and minerals, that pigeons require to survive. All pigeons, even Damascene pigeons, need access to clean, fresh water. Ensure that there is always access to fresh water, and make sure to periodically clean and replenish the water dish.

Damascene pigeons can benefit from occasional feeds of fresh fruits and vegetables in addition to pigeon chow. Apples, carrots, peas, and leafy greens are all healthy choices. Pigeons need grit to aid in food digestion, and oyster shells provide a rich supply of calcium, which is necessary for strong bones and female pigeons’ ability to produce eggs.
