Characteristics and Genetics

A type of Criollo cow known as corriente cattle is descended from Spanish animals that were first introduced to the Americas in 1493. Today, they are mostly employed as sport cattle for rodeo competitions like team roping and bulldogging (steer wrestling). Some breeders raise them for their meat, which has about half the fat of that seen in the majority of contemporary beef cattle. Corrientes cows typically weigh less than 1,000 pounds, making them relatively tiny cattle (450 kg). They have long, up curving horns and are slender and athletic. They are referred to as “easy keepers” since their calving requires minimal human assistance, and they eat far less than larger beef cattle varieties. The corriente can survive on the scant open range and needs less water than other Criollo breeds. Because they can scale a typical barbed-wire fence and squeeze through relatively small gaps, Corrientes is also recognized for its skilled escape artists.

Uses

Corriente cattle are occasionally bred for beef production and are frequently employed in sports. Breeders like Corrientes’ independence, cheap maintenance requirements, and sporting prowess in particular. Corriente cattle are prized for team roping and bulldogging competitions in particular because, as already indicated, they are robust and skilled jumpers.

Population/Distribution/Habitat

The majority of the time, corriente cattle are raised in pastures, open ranges, and paddocks. Although the precise population is unclear, breeding is pretty frequent and this breed is not threatened. The Corriente is mostly found in the US, although it is becoming more and more well-known worldwide and attracting interest from cattle associations in both the US and Spain.
