Cockroaches

Cockroaches

The Blattodea group of insects known as cockroaches (or roaches) includes all of the group’s members with the exception of termites. Cockroaches are a very old species; its “roachoids” ancestors emerged around 320 million years ago, during the Carboniferous epoch. But unlike modern roaches, these primitive relatives lacked the internal ovipositors. Cockroaches, being rather generalist insects without unique adaptations (such the sucking mouthparts of aphids and other true bugs). Instead, they have gnawing mouthparts. They are widespread, robust insects that can survive in a variety of climatic conditions, from Arctic cold to tropical heat.

  • Head

Their color varies from reddish-brown to dark brown, and they have a small head and a broad, flattened body. They have two ocelli, long, flexible antennae, and big compound eyes. The mouthparts are located on the bottom of the head and consist of numerous touch and taste sensors, mandibles for chewing, and salivary glands.

  • Abdomen and Thorax

The body is divided into a ten-segmented abdomen and a three-segment thorax. Wings are attached to the thoracic segments (2nd and 3rd). Strong and protective, the tegmina, or first pair of wings, serve as a shield for the membrane hind wings, which are employed for flying.  Each pair out of three pairs of legs has five claws and a big coxae. Each of the three thoracic segments is where they are attached. The longest and shortest of them are the hind legs, which are used as the insect’s primary means of propulsion when running. Robotic legs have been designed after the constructions. Ten segments make up the abdomen, and each segment has two spiracles for breathing. The last segment is made up of the spiracles, two cerci, two anal styles, the anus, and the external genitalia.

Habitat

  • Cockroaches are widespread and can be found in a variety of habitats, notably in the tropics and subtropics. Cockroaches live in a variety of habitats.
  • Cockroaches prefer to reside near a consistent water source, such as a kitchen or bathroom faucet. They seek out damp, humid, and gloomy areas and are drawn to water. A cockroach may be found in a home or apartment if: furniture, boxes, ceilings, cellars and gaps in the walls
  • Cockroaches try to conceal themselves during the day since they prefer to be active at night. They emerge from hiding when light sources are no longer present. They may reside outside the home in: tree twigs, shrubbery, sewers, sewer pipes and trash cans,

Diet

As omnivores, cockroaches consume both plants and animals. Roaches are not fussy eaters, although they do prefer grains, sugar, oily meals, and meats. They will gorge themselves on almost anything that was once a living thing, including plants and animals.

Cockroach Life Cycle

The life cycle of a cockroach contains three stages: egg, nymph, and adult.

  • Adults produce egg casings of a dark tint that enclose the eggs (size and shape of a dry kidney bean).
  • An egg case contains 16 to 50 eggs, depending on the species.
  • Young cockroaches termed nymphs, which are more abundant than adults, are produced when eggs hatch.

Despite the negative reputation that cockroaches generally have, hissing cockroaches are a common pet. Contrary to many other land-dwelling invertebrates, these insects are around two inches long and reasonably strong, making them much easier to handle. They are among the least demanding pets available and are also quite simple to care for.

Conditions to Keep Hissing Cockroaches as Pet

  • Habitat size

For Madagascar hissing cockroaches, a minimum 5-gallon habitat with a tight-fitting lid is advised to allow for typical habits and exercise.

  • Preparation of Habitat

Habitat: Create hiding spaces with nontoxic plants, branches, logs, or cork bark; mist daily to maintain high humidity levels (60 to 70%).

Substrate: Mulch-type commercial materials such bedding made of coconut fibre, sphagnum moss that has been wet, and reptile bark

Temperature: An under-tank heater should be used to keep the temperature between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

Lighting: Cockroaches are nocturnal and do not require specific lighting; avoid exposing them to direct sunlight for extended periods of time. Instead, use a low-wattage nocturnal or infrared light to observe cockroaches at night.

Water: To avoid drowning, use a shallow water dish with big stones or cricket quencher gel.

  • Diet

A healthy hissing cockroach diet includes:

In addition to a commercial cockroach diet, romaine lettuce, red leaf lettuce, kale, collard greens, squash, apples, and carrots are occasionally overripe fruits.

  • Care

Always wash your hands before and after handling your cockroaches to prevent getting the waxy coating in any cuts or scrapes.

Species

Since they have existed for millions of years, cockroaches have developed into some of the most adapted pests on the planet. In the world, there are about 4,000 different species of cockroaches. The United States is home to over 70 of these species. Name of some species are below:

  • American cockroach
  • Oriental cockroach
  • Florida woods cockroach
  • Dusky cockroach
  • Forest cockroach
