Description
Scientific name: Nasua nasua
Life span: Up to 15 years
The Coatimundi is a highly clever and powerful ground-dwelling exotic animal. The body length ranges between 33- 69 cm with a height of about 30 cm. They weigh about 2-8 kg. Males are bigger in size as compared to females and have massive sharp canines. They have long, flexible, and somewhat upward snouts that help them to probe insects, lizards, small rodents, fruits, and snakes from cracks in the rocks. Their limbs are strong and have black paws that are enough to climb and dig. Their head has small and round ears. Their tail is long and prehensile, which helps them in signaling and balancing. They prefer to rest on tree branches by tucking their nose in their belly.
Native Region/Habitat
Coatimundi are native to Mexico, Arizona, Texas, Amazonian forests, and Andean mountains. They inhabit grasslands, hot and arid areas, and bushy areas.
As Pet
Behavior/Temperament
Coatimundi is a very affectionate, energetic, and active animal. They do not need that much care as compared to other pets. They make incredibly loving and devoted pets if properly cared for and bought when they are young. Creating a relationship with a newborn is rather simple, but with an older adult who is not attached to you, it may be very difficult. Each Coatimundi has its own personality. They walk so long in the daytime in search of food. They are not aggressive pets. They may not intentionally break and chew objects, but they will still prod whatever they come across with their noses as they stroll about and jump on it.
Care/Grooming
In captivity, about 4- 5 members of coatimundi are placed in the same enclosure. The need for an outdoor enclosure requires close supervision since they frequently break out of their enclosure. They may be trained to use the restroom or to litter. As with many ferrets, pet skunks, rabbits, and rodents, they frequently select a toilet area, which may be equipped with a litter pan. Vaccinations against distemper, several other infections, and a lethal rabies vaccine are typically required for them.
