Clown Nudibranch

Description

The clown nudibranch, also known as Ceratosoma amoenum, is a species of vibrant sea slug belonging to the Chromodorididae family of marine gastropod mollusks. This species’ white body is intricately decorated, especially on the dorsum, with orange and purple patches. The individuals in New Zealand have the largest spots, which vary in size depending on range. The patterning of this species varies to some extent. Both the rhinophores and the unbranched gills can retract into pockets, and they are both crimson-white in colour.

Geographical Distribution

In temperate southern Australia and northern New Zealand, the intertidal zones are home to the common nudibranch Ceratosoma amoenum. A few sightings have also been recorded off the southern Queensland coast.

Keeping as Pet

Sponge consumption by Ceratosoma amoenum is well recognized. It has been observed consuming sponges of the species Dysidea fragilis and the genus Semitaspongia.

In addition, depending on the nudibranch species, clown nudibranchs have a specialized diet that may include particular types of sponges, sea anemones, or hydroids. Hobbyists might not be able to reliably offer the food source these sensitive critters need. Numerous nudibranchs only live a few weeks to a year on average, which makes them unsuitable as long-term pets.
