Physical characteristics and behavior
Clown anemonefish are typically much less brilliant and have narrow black bars. Due to their vivid orange coloring and three white bands, clown anemonefish are unquestionably one of the most visible reef residents. Their residence in vibrant sea anemones gives them their name, and they can reach lengths of around 4.3 inches. In a dance, clownfish will caress an anemone’s tentacles with various parts of their bodies until they feel at ease. A thin layer of mucus on a clown fish’s skin shields it from the lethal sting of a fish-eating anemone. The clownfish defends its host by frightening off potential dangers and pretending to get rid of parasites that compete with it for resources like food, leftovers, and shelter.
Habitat
Clownfish require water that is in the upper seventies Fahrenheit range, has a specific gravity of 1.023, and has a pH range of 8 to 8.4. Not a lot of excess metabolic waste should exist.
Care When Keeping as Pet
- Requirements for clownfish tanks
To provide this fish a healthy environment that is similar to nature, learn about the tank needs for it:
- Tank Size
A clownfish requires a minimum of a 50-gallon aquarium. A solitary fish can live happily in a 20-gallon tank as well, but larger tanks are necessary if you want to have a few pairs of fish. If you also intend to build up a community tank with anemones, a much larger tank will also be necessary.
- Substrate
Sand is the best substrate to use if you want to mimic their natural habitat. However, you can use any substrate. Experts frequently stated that this fish would be fine in a tank without a substrate, but if it’s a community tank, the substrate might be required for the other fish. So choose your choice wisely!
- Decoration
It will be aesthetically attractive for the viewers as well as the fish if rocks, live rocks, reefs, and imitation reefs are used as décor. For this fish, remember to provide hiding places. Also, watch out that even with all of these decorations, there is still enough room for the fish to swim.
- Type of Water for Clownfish
Since this fish is quite finicky about the sort of water it needs, make sure to check the water before putting it.
- Temperature, pH Level and Gravity
Clownfish should be kept at a temperature between 74 and 79 degrees Fahrenheit (23.3-26.1 degrees Celsius), with a pH between 7.8 and 8.4. Additionally, the SG gravity should be between 1.023 and 1.025 for this fish. Check these parameters at least once every week.
- Cleaning
To lower the level of nitrite/nitrate/ammonia, it will be necessary to eliminate extra food particles or fish waste, just like with any other fish. Algae scrapers may be used to remove the algae, but the use of any kind of chemical is not permitted.
- Suitable Clownfish Tank Companions
In their natural home, clownfish are often not picky and get along well with a variety of other species. They won’t be harmed by species that reside at a lower water level. Similar to clownfish, tiny fish can also coexist with them. With this, you may build up a community aquarium with a variety of fish, including damselfish, wrasse, dartfish, hawkfish, butterflyfish, and blenny.
- Animal Clownfish Diet
An omnivore fish consumes a variety of foods, which immediately makes it popular. You can give your adorable companion any store-bought fish food (flakes or pellets). They are accustomed to eating meaty items in the environment and will quickly consume small crustaceans, fish eggs, copepods, larvae, anemone tentacles, etc.
