Characteristics and Genetics
The Cinta Senese breed of domestic pig originated in Tuscany, in central Italy, in the province of Siena.
Animals raised in Tuscany have gained DOP designation since 2006, and they are referred to as Suino Cinto Toscano DOP. The Cinta Senese is one of the six indigenous pig breeds recognised by the Italian ministry of agriculture and forestry, Ministero delle Politiche Agricole Alimentari e Forestali.
In the region between the upper Merse and upper Elsa rivers, the Cinta Senese is particularly connected to the Montagnola Senese and the comuni of Casole d’Elsa, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Gaiole in Chianti, Monteriggioni, Siena, and Sovicille.
