Chow Chow

A spitz-like dog breed that originated in northern China is the chow chow.

Physical Characteristics

The Chow Chow is a sturdy-built dog with a square in profile. It has short, triangular, upright ears with rounded tips. A highly dense double coat that can be either rough or smooth distinguishes the breed. The neck region has particularly dense hair, giving it a characteristic mane or ruff appearance. The coat can be cream, black, blue, cinnamon/fawn, or shaded/self-red. Spring and autumn are the seasons when the chow breed sheds its fur the most, necessitating more grooming care than other times of the year. The coats of Chow Chows are often either short and smooth or longer and rougher. As it approaches the skin, both produce a thick, fuzzy coating.

Grooming

They should be groomed four times per week, although during the shedding season, daily grooming may be necessary. A spray conditioner can also aid in preventing tearing and damage to the thick covering of hair. Last but not least, a monthly bath is necessary to retain a clean coat of fur and keep fleas at bay.

If your dog isn’t active enough to wear their nails down, you should also consider trimming their nails every two weeks. Additionally, it’s a good idea to brush your dog’s teeth two to three times a week to maintain good oral health.

Exercise

Chows don’t have tremendous levels of energy or excessive activity, yet they still require regular exercise to keep healthy and content. A decent place to start is with a few daily 15–30 minute walks. However, they do not enjoy boisterous romps. When exercising your chow, keep in mind that while it does well in cold weather, it struggles in warmer weather. When it’s hot outside, the dog needs a cool place to be, preferably inside.

Diet and Nutrition

A chow chow should receive one to 1.5 cups of dog food at each of its two daily meals. The quantity will vary over the course of your pet’s life depending on his size and activity level. Check to see if your dog has access to clean, fresh water. You may aid in preventing your dog from gulping down food or overeating by setting a limit for each meal. Doing so might cause bloating and possibly result in stomach torsion, which is a medical emergency.

Keep an eye on your dog’s weight because, hidden beneath that thick coat of fur, there may be more weight than first appears. A dog’s life will be shortened by obesity.
