Description:
Scientific name: Gyalopion canum
Life span: Unknown
The Western hooknose snake, also known as Gyalopion canum, is a type of small colubrid snake. Because it frequently inhabits the Chihuahuan Desert, it is also known as the Chihuahuan hook-nosed snake.
Native Region/Habitat
From western Texas to southeastern Arizona and into northern and central Mexico, G. canum can be found in the United States. The Western hooknose snake favours areas that are slightly sandier and close to a reliable source of water.
Behavior:
- canum is a nocturnal burrower that is typically discovered beneath rocks. It is nocturnal and crepuscular, and when startled, it may engage in a behavior known as anal popping, in which it pops air from its vent.
Care As a pet/In captivity:
They have a wonderful personality, and because of their unpredictable wild antics, many people refer to them as snake con artists. Their overall upkeep and husbandry are easy and straightforward.
There is little research on it and little knowledge about captive animals.
